Eyes, ears and skin

Scratching, shaking, squinting.
We can help today.

Eye, ear, and skin issues are among the most common reasons pets need same-day care. They are uncomfortable, they escalate fast, and they are very treatable when caught early. Walk in today.

These conditions get worse the longer they wait.

An ear infection that goes untreated for a few days can spread deeper and become much harder to clear. A corneal scratch that seems minor can develop into a serious ulcer within 24 to 48 hours. Skin hot spots can double in size overnight.

Eye, ear, and skin issues are not usually emergencies, but they are not things to watch and wait on either. A quick same-day visit stops the discomfort and prevents a small problem from becoming a bigger one.

Eyes, ears, and skin — all in one visit.

We handle a wide range of eye, ear, and skin conditions on a walk-in basis. Same-day evaluation, in-house diagnostics, and treatment that starts the same visit.

Ears

Ear infections

Bacterial and yeast infections are among the most common reasons dogs and cats visit the vet. We clean the ear canal, identify the type of infection, and prescribe targeted treatment to clear it up quickly.

Ear mites

Ear mites are tiny parasites that cause intense itching and dark, coffee-ground-like discharge. More common in cats, but dogs can get them too. We confirm with a quick microscopic exam and treat the same day.

Chronic ear issues

Some pets deal with recurring ear problems due to allergies, anatomy, or moisture. We evaluate the underlying cause and provide a management plan, not just another round of drops.

Eyes

Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Redness, discharge, and swelling of the eye lining. Can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or allergens. We determine the cause and prescribe the right drops or ointment to clear it.

Corneal scratches and ulcers

Eye injuries can progress very quickly without treatment. A scratch that seems minor can turn into a deep ulcer within 48 hours. We evaluate with fluorescein staining and start treatment the same visit.

Red, watery, or irritated eyes

Runny eyes can signal allergies, foreign material, or early infection. We identify the cause and treat it before it worsens. Eye issues should never be left to see how they go.

Skin

Hot spots

Acute moist dermatitis — hot, painful, rapidly spreading skin infections. They double in size quickly and are extremely uncomfortable. We clean, treat, and stop the spread the same visit.

Allergic skin reactions

Seasonal allergens, food sensitivities, and contact reactions all show up in the skin. Constant scratching, red patches, and hair loss are signals. We evaluate and provide both immediate relief and a longer-term plan.

Rashes, lumps, and bumps

Sudden rashes, hives, or new skin masses deserve a look. We evaluate whether something needs treatment now, monitoring over time, or further testing.

Wounds and lacerations

Cuts, bite wounds, and abrasions that need cleaning, closure, or antibiotic treatment. We handle minor wound care on a walk-in basis so small injuries do not turn into serious infections.

Save Your Spot Now

St. Pete is tough on skin and eyes.

Florida's year-round warmth, humidity, and high pollen count create a perfect environment for allergies, parasites, and infections that keep flaring up. Pets in St. Petersburg often deal with these issues more frequently than those in drier or colder climates.

Year-round pollen

Multiple allergy seasons mean constant environmental triggers for skin itching, watery eyes, and ear inflammation.

Humidity and moisture

Warm, humid conditions encourage bacterial and yeast growth in skin folds and ear canals — especially in floppy-eared breeds.

Beach and water exposure

Sand, saltwater, and chlorinated pools irritate eyes and skin. Post-beach shaking and scratching is a common reason for ear infections.

Fleas and mites

Never fully dormant in Florida. Flea allergy dermatitis and ear mites are year-round problems, not just seasonal ones.

Eyes, ears and skin FAQs.

Questions we hear most from pet owners dealing with these issues.

My pet has been scratching their ears for a few days. Should I come in?

Yes. A few days of ear scratching almost always means an infection or mites are already established. Waiting longer lets the infection deepen and become harder to clear. We will look inside the ear canal, identify what is going on, and get treatment started the same visit. Ear issues do not resolve on their own.

My pet's eye is a little red and weepy. Is it urgent?

Eye issues should always be seen the same day if possible. What looks like mild irritation can be a corneal scratch, and corneal injuries can worsen significantly within 24 to 48 hours. We use a quick fluorescein stain to check for scratches or ulcers and treat accordingly. It is always better to check and find nothing serious than to wait and find something that has progressed.

What causes recurring ear infections in dogs?

The most common underlying causes are allergies, moisture, and ear anatomy. Dogs with floppy ears or lots of hair in the ear canal trap warmth and moisture, creating ideal conditions for yeast and bacteria. In St. Petersburg, water and beach exposure make this even more common. We treat the active infection and discuss the underlying cause so we can help prevent it from coming straight back.

My dog has a hot spot that appeared overnight. What should I do?

Come in today. Hot spots are fast-moving infections that can double or triple in size within 24 hours if left untreated. The longer they go without treatment, the more painful and difficult to manage they become. We clean the area, clip the surrounding fur, and start topical and systemic treatment to stop it from spreading.

Can allergies cause ear and skin problems at the same time?

Yes, very commonly. Allergies — whether seasonal, environmental, or food-related — often manifest in multiple ways at once. A pet with allergies may have itchy skin, recurring ear infections, and watery eyes all at the same time. We look at the full picture and treat both the immediate symptoms and discuss longer-term management so the cycle does not keep repeating.

Do you see both dogs and cats for eye, ear, and skin issues?

Yes, we see both dogs and cats. Eye, ear, and skin conditions are common in both species and we treat them on a walk-in basis. Give us a call at (727) 390-0333 if you have questions before coming in.
